“Will you stop doing that?” she heard her father ask. “It only gets you mopey.”

She sighed as she turned and glanced at him. “That might have been true when I was a kid, but that was several years ago. I think I’m well past that phase of my life now.”

He cocked a brow at her, narrowing his eyes as he studied her. “You’re well past Dawson McKiney? I call bullshit. If it were true, you wouldn’t be standing there, gazing off at something you know you’ll never have.”

She left her spot by the window and moved to where he sat, sipping his coffee. “Well, you can call it what you want, but it’s the truth. All I was doing was listening to the music, remembering the times I would sneak over to the corner of their house and watch from the shadows. It always reminded me of a fantasy ball. I was so easily impressed back then.”

A snort of derision burst from his lips. “And Charleston opened your eyes? Again, I call bullshit.”

She laughed as she moved over to join him at the table. “That’s fine. I don’t believe me, either.”
