How to Find the Joy in Reading Again (Even if You've Lost It)

How to Find the Joy in Reading Again (Even if You've Lost It)

There was a time when reading felt effortless.

You’d fall into a story and suddenly it was 2 a.m. Or later.

Your coffee was cold.

Your heart was wrecked.

And you loved every second of it, eager to move on to the next.

But somewhere along the way, life got louder.

Work. Family. Notifications. Stress. Endless scrolling.

If you’ve found yourself staring at a book without actually reading it, or having abandoned reading altogether, you’re not alone. To be honest, I was there for the past five years.

Losing your reading spark happens. The good news? You can find the joy in reading again — and sometimes it only takes a small shift to get back there.

But why do we lose our reading motivation? What causes us to ignore our TBR or lose the excitement of discovering a new author?

Before we talk about rediscovering reading joy, let’s normalize something: A reading slump is real.

Thousands of times a month, people search for things like:

how to get back into reading

how to enjoy reading again

reading slump solutions

how to find motivation to read

Burnout isn’t just for work. It can happen with hobbies too — especially if reading starts to feel like a checklist instead of an escape. Does that TBR list feel like a competition? It was never meant to be that way.

Reading is supposed to be immersive, emotional, and personal. When it turns into pressure (“I need to finish 50 books this year”), the magic can fade. My goal is 52 by the way.

1. Let Go of Reading Goals (For a While)

Yes, I said it.

If your annual reading goal is stressing you out, pause it.

Reading should never feel like homework.

Instead of focusing on how many books you’re finishing, focus on:

Stories that genuinely excite you

Genres you love (romance, paranormal, fantasy, cozy mystery)

Books that feel like comfort

Sometimes rediscovering the joy of reading starts with removing the pressure entirely.

2. Revisit a Favorite Genre

If you’re asking, “Why can’t I enjoy reading anymore?” the answer might be simple:

You’re reading the wrong book.

Go back to what you know you love.

Love paranormal romance? Pick up a fated mates story.

Love small-town romance? Grab a grumpy/sunshine cowboy.

Love urban fantasy? Dive into witches and magic.

Reading for pleasure works best when you lean into what makes your heart race — not what’s trending on social media.

3. Create a Cozy Reading Ritual

One of the best ways to rediscover reading joy is to make it intentional.

Create a cozy reading environment:

Light a candle

Make a cup of coffee or tea (For me, it’s a whiskey at night)

Grab a soft blanket

Silence notifications

Turn on a soft playlist (I listen to Celtic music sometimes on YouTube)

Romanticize your reading time.

When reading becomes a ritual instead of an afterthought, your brain starts associating it with comfort again.

4. Try Shorter Reads or Novellas

If committing to a 400-page novel feels overwhelming, start smaller.

Novellas, short romances, or bite-sized fantasy stories are perfect for rebuilding momentum.

Finishing a book — even a short one — can reignite that “just one more chapter” feeling.

5. Join a Reader Community

Reading is often solitary, but it doesn’t have to be lonely.

Consider:

A romance book club (I'm actually about to join a book club myself)

An online reader group (I’ve got a great one on Facebook you could join)

A subscription book box

Following indie authors

Book communities remind you why stories matter.

Talking about characters, plot twists, and favorite scenes helps you reconnect with what made you love reading in the first place.

6. Support Indie Authors & Exclusive Editions

Sometimes the excitement comes from discovering something new and unique.

Exclusive editions, signed paperbacks, limited releases, and bookish subscription boxes bring a sense of anticipation back into reading.

When a book feels special — collectible — or part of a larger story world, it reignites that spark.

It’s not just reading. It’s belonging.

7. Allow Yourself to DNF (Did Not Finish)

Here’s permission:

If a book isn’t working for you, stop reading it.

Forcing yourself through a story you’re not enjoying is one of the fastest ways to deepen a reading slump.

Your time is valuable. Your joy is valuable.

Protect both.

Reading Joy Isn’t Gone — It’s Waiting

If you’ve been wondering how to fall in love with reading again, the answer isn’t complicated.

Slow down.

Choose stories that excite you.

Create cozy moments.

Let go of guilt.

Reading isn’t about numbers.

It’s about connection — to characters, to worlds, to emotion.

And sometimes, all it takes is the right book at the right moment to remind you why you started in the first place.

Ready to Rediscover the Magic?

If you’re looking for romance, paranormal adventure, cozy mysteries, or emotionally charged slow burns, explore stories that are written to pull you in — not push you through.

Because the joy of reading isn’t lost.

It’s just waiting for you to turn the page.
